Maui Youth & Family Services is the beneficiary for Afterglow Yoga’s donation-based classes in the months of April and May, with 100% of proceeds going to the nonprofit. Afterglow Yoga studio, located at 1942 Main Street in Wailuku, offers a variety of classes including alignment flow, barre, belly dance fusion, kundalini, vinyasa flow and hot yoga.

In April the donation-based “all-level yoga” classes will take place at noon on Fridays and in May at noon on both Wednesdays and Fridays. Suggested donation is $10 per class, but organizers say participants are welcome to give whatever they want.

Funds will help MYFS empower youth and families challenged with behavioral health issues to become responsible, self-fulfilled and contributing members of the community through outreach and advocacy, therapeutic foster care, emergency shelters and substance abuse treatment/counseling.

“Giving back to the community in which I was raised lifts my heart up,” said Afterglow Yoga owner Jasmine Judson, who grew up in Makawao.

“We chose MYFS because we are passionate about helping provide youth with a safe and loving environment in which they can truly thrive and succeed. This is a great way to not only contribute to MYFS’ efforts, but also to spread awareness so people know what resources are out there for young people in need.”

Maui Hot Yoga is great for EVERYONE!

Are you curious about hot Yoga? Often times when people think about Hot yoga they think of Bikram yoga which is comprised of the same 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises per class. While many people practice this type of yoga worldwide, our hot yoga is not based on Bikram principles. At Afterglow Yoga in Wailuku,Maui our hot yoga classes use far infrared heaters with a varied vinyasa flow class to gently open the muscles and quite the monkey mind. The yoga poses are different every time, but the infrared heat is consistent.

What is Infrared Heat?

Infrared heaters convert light directly to heat, warming nearby objects without raising the actual air temperature. This allows a student in an infrared class to absorb heat while the surrounding air does not. This type of heat is most like natural sunlight and differs greatly from a heater that heats the air in a room, because it actually is absorbed by the skin providing a greater effect on increased circulation, muscle flexibility and detoxification. As your body absorbs infrared waves, molecules begin to vibrate, causing them to start to expel the toxins, fat and impurities from your cells into your blood stream. These will then be released from your body in the form of sweat. The result is an incredible cleansing effect at a cellular level. Your muscles and internal organs will be gently warmed..and thank you!

New Study Shows That Yoga Eases Back Pain

Yoga classes were linked to better back-related function and diminished symptoms from chronic low back pain in the largest U.S. randomized controlled trial of yoga to date, published by the Archives of Internal Medicine. Back-related function was better and symptoms were diminished with yoga at 12 weeks; and clinically important benefits, including less use of pain medications, lasted at least six months for both yoga and stretching, with thorough follow-up of more than nine in 10 participants. Meaning that the longer you commit to your yoga practice, the greater the benefits. This is one of the motivations behind our monthly unlimited contracts. If you can commit to showing up for your practice you WILL see results!

As practicing yogis we already knew this, but it is nice to get some double-blind studied proof for those non-believers. So what are you waiting for? Often times beginners are intimidated by the newness of the yoga practice. We have a solution for that! In addition to alignment based yoga classes, Afterglow Yoga also offers a Beginners Yoga Series 3 times per month. You can join per class or come for the monthly yoga series.

Our Wailuku Yoga studio offers classes seven days a week in many modalities including ashtanga yoga, maui hot yoga, kundalini yoga and hath yoga. Afterglow Yoga offers Free Yoga Classes!

Our latest batch of 200 Hour Yoga Teacher trainees have finished up their program and are ready to share their class offerings with you. After every 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training Program, Afterglow Yoga hosts free yoga classes for the community taught by our recent graduates.

Classes begin on Friday, July 8th through July 22nd, 2016 at varying times each day. Please check the up to date online schedule at www.yogateachertrainingmaui.com

All the classes are absolutely free, but we always accept donations for local non-profit organizations. The recipient of our community’s donations will be Hawaii Animal Rescue Foundation (HARF).

HARF offers the following services to our Maui Community:

• Pet adoptions
• Re-homing programs
• Off island relocation services.
• Special needs animals foster care programs.
• Volunteer opportunities & services.

H.A.R.F partners with other animal welfare organizations to bring healthy, adoptable animals to us, helping to lessen the homeless pet overpopulation that plagues our island.

Ten percent of the animals we receive are owner surrenders and 90 percent are transferred from other organizations filled to capacity.

Maui’s Best Yoga Instructor 2016

Our very own Afterglow Yoga Instructor, Jasmine Judson has won Maui Time’s Award for Maui’s Best Yoga Instructor! Each year the Maui Community chooses its favorites for beaches, bartenders, and Yoga Instructors. Although there are many instructors on Maui, Jasmine was chosen as Maui’s favorite for 2016. Her classes combine basic alignment principles of yoga with fun challenges to keep it fresh. Jasmine also teaches a class of her own design, the women only Shakti Sweat and Shake class. “The Shakti Sweat class is an opportunity for women to get together to move their bodies, embrace their feminine prowess, and leave inhibitions outside. All ladies, all ages, all sizes coming together to move!”

Announcing Afterglow Yoga Lahaina!

Thank you Maui community for welcoming us so graciously. Our last year has been such a fun journey, and we are so pleased to announce the opening of our second location: Afterglow Yoga Lahaina. Our new location is in the historic district of Old Lahaina town and will feature the same quality instruction that you have come to know from our Wailuku studio; lots of great yoga, barre, infrared heated classes and movement at a price that you can afford. To celebrate our newest community space, we will be offering a discounted membership rate at this location for our first 100 members. Our first 100 members can sign up for a $60 monthly unlimited contract*. For less than the price of a drop-in class per week, you will have access to all of our amazing yoga, barre, and movement classes.

How to Be Present in Yoga (And Life!)

We understand, even though we live in paradise, arriving to your Maui yoga class and letting everything go is sometimes hard to do.  Just know, that you are not alone, it happens to all of us.  Whether your mind is racing with your weekly to-do list, lingering demands from your co-workers, or you just have life in general on your mind, here are a few tips to help you set your focus so you can get the most out of your practice:

  • Arrive to class a few minutes early!  Say your alohas, then set up your mat and take a few minutes to settle in before the class begins.  We have so many props to help you find your comfort! Grab a bolster or a few blocks or blankets, lie down, or find a comfortable seat, or take viparita karani (legs up the wall).  Close your eyes.  Take a few moments to go inward before you start your class.
  • Breathe!  Start to feel your breath in your body.   Make your inhalations and exhalations slow and steady.  Feel the breath fill your belly and lift your chest.  Let the exhalations release anything that is not needed for your practice.
  •  

  • See with your Mind.  What?  That sounds crazy.  While you want to look at the instructor to understand the pose they are doing, try to follow their verbal instruction instead of watching every move they do.  Listen to their cues and their guidance.  Sure you can peek at your instructor, but maybe see if you can follow along just by listening.  You’ll be surprised at how much you already know and how the practice comes along naturally!
  • Find your Drishti.  Ever try to get into vrksasana, or Tree Pose, only to check yourself out in the mirror and bam! —  your tree topples over?  Well, first of all, that is OK!  No one is judging your tree except for you.  But to help ground yourself, focus on something that does not move, like a spot on the floor or wall in front of you.  Try not to notice what anyone else is doing, as they are doing the same as you!  Their best!!!
  • Continue to Breathe!  Yes, it’s that important that we need to remind ourselves this all the time.  Without the breath, there is no yoga.   Keep your breath steady; your breath is a good gauge to let you know if you need to take a break.  Take your childs pose to help you slow your breath down, exhale your air out of your mouth — say haaaaaaa to let it all go!
  • Go Slow and Restore.  Have you tried our Slow Flow and Restorative classes on Maui?  These classes are a welcomed departure from our movement classes, where you’ll use bolsters, blankets, blocks, and meditative breathing — allowing your body to release into calming, restful poses, so your mind can let go too.  You’ll walk out of the class feeling luscious and in a state of bliss.  Check out our yoga classes in Wailuku and Lahaina and give yourself this gift of slowing down.

Feel free to talk with your instructor after class and let them know where you are having challenges.  Our yoga instructors at Afterglow are more than happy to help you make the most of your practice.   And next time you find it difficult to find your focus on or off the mat, take a few moments for yourself, close your eyes, find your breath, and you will find your center!
